TITLE: Technician III (Technical Productions/Theatre)
DIVISION: Academic Affairs (College of Arts & Sciences: Theatre)
REPORTS TO: Department Chair

SUPERVISES: Guest Artists, student assistants
Basic Function:
Has primary responsibility for the University’s Robert E. Will Theatre, J Studio blackbox theatre, and G Studio blackbox theatre. Responsible for outside use of the facility by on-campus or rentals by the community-at-large. Supervise all aspects of technical theatre for the production program of URI Theatre, including the training of student workers. Teach “Introduction to Stage Craft” for both fall and spring semesters.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Translate the designer’s plans into working drawings and
devise practical division of scenery and sets for ease of handling and
shifting.
Maintain the operational status of the scene shop, ensuring that shop equipment
is in good operational condition.
Purchase/maintain adequate supplies of hardware, building materials,
paint and yard goods.
Supervise the building (i.e., layout, cutting, covering and painting), final assembly and rigging of all scenery and properties.
Advise departmental production staff of the progress or problems that affect schedules and budgets.
Provide staffing and supervision of student production crews such as electricians, carpenters, stagehands and fly persons. Ensure safe working conditions for the crews.
Recommend and perform preventive maintenance on all
theatre equipment relating to the
Supervise all aspects of technical theatre for the production program of URI Theatre, including the training of students to function and work as technical directors, production set crews, load-in and strike crews, stage crews, road or touring crews, and audio and lightboard operators.
Train and supervise students in technical theatre practices as required in academic course needs, e.g., THE 100, 475, 463, 420 and production lab courses, i.e., THE 291, 300, 301, 391, 400 and 401.
Train and supervise workstudy and other students employed by the Theatre Department who are assigned to assist in the operation and maintenance of the theatre facilities, the scene shop, and the storage rooms used for properties, scenery and equipment, and train them in safety procedures for all equipment used in the scene shop and stage areas.
Serve as instructor for THE 161, Introduction to Stage Craft, for both fall and spring semesters.
Supervise and/or assist non-URI Theatre Department use of the theatre facilities, when approved by the department, including assisting with road shows, concerts, festivals or meetings.
Assist campus organizations in the execution of events, when approved by the department, requiring technical theatre knowledge and/or the loan of equipment.
Maintain and repair existing theatre equipment to ensure safe operational status and to recommend the acquisition of new or replacement equipment.
Control the use of equipment and materials for production and instructional needs, including over 300 lighting instruments (e.g., a replacement lamp inventory, color media inventory, cables, connectors), as well as scaffolding, hand tools, ladders, hand properties, set properties, stage curtains and scenery (e.g., flats, frames, platforms, wagons).
Monitor the use of the theatre facility to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment, thereby deterring loss and destruction of equipment and materials.
Research and price all supplies and equipment for the needs of the instructional and production program, the scene shop, and the theatre facility, and execute purchasing procedures to fulfill these needs.
Maintain, balance and submit final production budgets for each production, including cash advances in the departmental format within 5 days after production closes.
Ensure that crews are on duty, and deal with problems
that arise in connection with the running of the technical elements, including,
but not limited to, scenery, sound or lights.
Assign responsibilities to each crew member for scene shifts, conduct shift
rehearsals with stage crew, props running crew, and lightboard operators,
including safety procedures for aforementioned positions.
Assist the director and make notes on details or problems requiring attention, and give notes to crew hands after rehearsals.
Assign responsibility for the cleanup and sweeping of the stage each night, as well as for the safe storage and security of the properties.
Supervise the striking and storing of the sets, the return of borrowed items, the striking of lights and cleanup of the stage and shop areas immediately following cl9osing day of each production.
Requisition new supplies to bring the shop inventories back to working level.
Assemble all the sketches, models and working drawings for the archival files.
Take responsibility for year-end restock of shop prior to last day of contractual obligation.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participate and vote on departmental production season, scholarships, guest artist review and selection.
Represent the department with regard to hazardous waste issues associated with the scene shop area, and maintain yearly hazardous waste certification offered by the University.
Assume responsibility for the supervision and approval of student workstudy/IPR timesheets according to payroll schedule.
Perform additional duties as required.
LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Power tools and hand tools; personal computers, printers; word processing software.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Bachelor’s degree in Theatre with an emphasis in theatre technology or related discipline, and a minimum of three years of practical work experience in technical production on the professional and/or university level; OR high school diploma with minimum of seven years of practical work experience in technical production on the professional and/or university level; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; demonstrated ability to organize, coordinate and supervise support staff; strong interpersonal skills. Must possess a working knowledge of industry safety standards.
