TITLE: Marine Research Associate IV
DIVISION: Academic Affairs (
REPORTS TO: Principal Investigators
GRADE: 14
SUPERVISES: Supervise support staff as required
BASIC FUNCTION:
Perform research on modeling and prediction of tropical cyclone activity and relevant atmospheric and oceanic processes pertinent to various federal and private grants. Pursue independent lines of creative research in the area of tropical cyclones and relevant physical issues.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the occasional review of principal investigators, perform both basic and applied research on tropical cyclones and relevant atmospheric and oceanic processes.
Participate in the development of tropical cyclone and large-scale atmospheric and oceanic general circulation models and conduct numerical experiments, both idealized and real-case, for assessing their performance.
Participate in the analysis of the model and observational data.
Develop analytical procedures, computer programs and techniques to be used for conducting the numerical experiments.
Prepare technical reports and professional articles and research proposals.
Instruct and supervise graduate students and others in the use of laboratory computers and application techniques.

Perform additional duties as required.

Personal computers, printers; word processing, database management and spreadsheet software.
ENVIRONMENTAL
CONDITIONS:
This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences or related field; experience in tropical meteorology and numerical modeling; prior experience that may have been gained through research experience in analysis of model and observational data; strong ability to conduct research with minimum supervision; fluency in scientific programming languages and prior experience with compliers, shell scripting techniques on UNIX operating workstations and mainframes; excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diverse population; excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to organize, coordinate and supervise support staff.
