TITLE: Marine Research Specialist I
DIVISION: Academic Affairs (
REPORTS TO: Associate Director
GRADE: 5
SUPERVISES: Undergraduate Students and Interns
BASIC FUNCTIONS:
Assist with the implementation of marine and environmental science education and outreach programs. Assist with the coordination of a national network of ocean science education centers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support national network communications for the Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence.
Assist with the dissemination of the results and products of Office of Marine Program’s projects.
Assist in the development and implementation of ocean science education initiatives.
Assist with the development of ocean science education materials for teacher institutes, professional development programs, and classroom use.
Assist with workshops, conferences, and short courses.
Assist with program reports.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist with travel and meeting logistics for national and regional meetings.
LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Must have experience with personal computers, scanners, digital cameras, graphic software, statistical software, field and laboratory equipment. Must have a valid driver’s license; and be CPR certified.
ENVIRONMENTAL
CONDITIONS:
No exposure to extreme environmental conditions. However, must be able to lead field groups
over rocky outcrops, in slippery splash zones, and muddy salt marshes.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Bachelor's
degree in communications, journalism or a related field; a minimum of one year
experience in ocean science education and outreach. Experience with the following required:
working in a university outreach setting; planning large events with a national
audience; producing ocean science meeting materials; proven ability interacting
with diverse groups of people, including groups underrepresented in math and
science education; working with K-12 students.
Familiarity with state and federal science education standards required;
as is Red Cross CPR certification. Must
provide own transportation. Preferred:
knowledge of ocean literacy principles.
