TITLE: Manager, Biological Sciences Undergraduate Laboratories
DIVISION: Academic Affairs (CELS: Bio Sci)
REPORTS TO: Department Chair, Instructors
GRADE: 11
SUPERVISES: Research Associates, Research Assistants, Support Staff, Graduate Students and Undergraduate Students
BASIC FUNCTION:
Responsible for the operation of the undergraduate biology and microbiology laboratories and supervision of personnel involved in their operation. Responsible for ordering supplies, procuring or growing live plant and animal material and microbiological cultures, and the procurement and maintenance of adequate equipment for efficient and safe laboratory operation. Responsible for the general upkeep of the laboratories and associated preparation and storage rooms. Responsible for developing and testing laboratory exercises.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise the preparation and availability of solutions, reagents, specimens, equipment and supplies for the efficient and safe operation of all biology laboratory courses.
Supervise staff with responsibility for delivery and operation of biology, microbiology, and biochemistry laboratory courses.
Supervise all student assistants whose duties involve the operation of laboratory courses.
Instruct teaching assistants, in conjunction with the laboratory course instructors and Department Chair, in the discharge of their duties and responsibilities in the laboratory.
Schedule teaching assistants’ laboratory assignments, proctor exams and quizzes, and prepare tutorial assignments in conjunction with the laboratory course instructors and Department Chair.
Assist the laboratory instructors in the development, testing and implementation of new laboratory experiments and procedures. Assume responsibility for the administration of all aspects of check-in, check-out, biological and chemical waste disposal, biohazard safety, and equipment replacement procedures, and promote good laboratory practices.
In conjunction with the laboratory course instructor and Department Chair, supervise the registration of students in laboratory courses, and maintain course rosters and grades.
OTHER DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist in other laboratory functions such as preparation of laboratory and lecture demonstrations or visual aids.
Teach laboratory sections as needed for course development and implementation.
Perform additional duties as required.
LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Personal computers, printers; word processing, database and spreadsheet software.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Master’s degree in biology or microbiology; working knowledge of methods and techniques routinely applied in performing experiments in the biology and microbiology laboratories, including safety and disposal of biological and chemical wastes; a working knowledge of the operation, care and maintenance of all equipment routinely used in biology and microbiology laboratories; ability to accurately follow detailed written and oral instructions pertaining to the safe and efficient operation of the biology and microbiology laboratory; ability to supervise and direct graduate teaching assistants in the safe and efficient exercise of their duties and responsibilities in the biology and microbiology laboratory; ability to plan and maintain adequate inventories of equipment and supplies for the safe and efficient operation of the biology and microbiology laboratory; strong interpersonal skills with ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and to organize, coordinate and supervise support staff; ability to interpret institutional policies, plans, objectives, rules and regulations and to communicate the interpretation to others.
