The School of Education at the University of Rhode Island invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Special Education, beginning Fall of 2009.

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Teach graduate courses and supervise field experiences in a new Master's program in Special Education (certification in mild-moderate disabilities, grades 1-8) designed to prepare highly qualified special educators for inclusive contexts. Priorities for new faculty expertise include developmental literacy, positive behavior supports, and assessment. Teach an introductory course with a focus on educating students with special needs in inclusive classes to pre-service students in early childhood, elementary, and secondary education. Additional duties include, but may not be limited to: advising graduate students; engaging in program development and accreditation activities; developing partnerships with public schools; conducting and publishing research; and serving on committees within the School and University. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required:  Earned doctorate in special education or a closely-related field from an accredited institution, or have a clear expectation of completion of the doctorate by August 2009; a bachelor's or master's degree in special education; a minimum of three years of successful teaching experience with students with mild disabilities in a public elementary school; ability to work with a diverse population. 

Preferred:  Special education teaching experience in inclusive elementary or middle public school classes with students with mild/moderate disabilities; interest in or experience teaching in urban settings; interest in or experience with obtaining external funding.
