TITLE:                                Research Assistant I

 

DIVISION:                         Academic Affairs (CELS: Biological Sciences) 

 

REPORTS TO:                Principal Investigator

                                   

GRADE:                              1

 

SUPERVISES:             

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Work under the general supervision of the PI to conduct physiological and biochemical research, and to manage laboratory and field operations.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Assist PI in conducting laboratory and field research on marine invertebrates.  Duties include setting up and carrying out small-scale manipulative experimental work, performing biochemical assays and using microscopes to document and count organisms.

 

Perform fieldwork at sea.  Work involves capturing, maintaining and censusing oceanic organisms, deploying and retrieving oceanographic equipment, and record keeping.

 

Work with members of the laboratory in the organization and development of research projects.

 

Responsible for ordering laboratory supplies as needed, and for field excursions. 

 

Maintain project records and budgets.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Perform other duties as required.

 

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

 

Personal computers, printers; word processing, database and spreadsheet software; research SCUBA certification.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

The incumbent is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions, however, there is the potential for adverse weather conditions when at sea.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required:  Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology; up to one year of research experience including both laboratory and field research settings, and including minimum of one month of experience at sea; coursework and experience in marine animal environmental physiology; experience with biochemical assays for metabolites and animal composition; experience in the collection, maintenance, photography and identification of oceanic zooplankton; research SCUBA certification; experience in laboratory management; willingness to work at sea for extended periods; strong interpersonal skills; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; commitment to diversity.

Salary Range: $23,543 - $29,430
