Research Specialist I

BASIC FUNCTION:
Conduct
independent research and compose formal communications in support of the
Metcalf Institute for Marine and Environmental Reporting projects. Lead effort
to develop a strategic outreach program for Metcalf Institute. Research and
implement outreach activities and maintain records and databases. Assist in the
implementation of endowment and grant-funded activities of the Metcalf
Institute.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct research and market analysis in support of outreach, training and education, and publicity activities related to Metcalf Institute programs. Assist in the design and execution of outreach strategies.
Under the direction of the PI, be principally responsible for researching, creating summaries of said research, and implementing PI’s decisions regarding appropriate outreach and promotion for Metcalf Institute, including securing and tracking advertising placements in consultation with supervisor; researching new contacts and audiences; writing and distributing press releases; writing program and lecture summaries for the Metcalf website; maintaining verbal and written relations with program alumni; writing and distributing the Metcalf newsletter.
Assist with specific outreach efforts such as public lectures and cultivation events. Provide logistical assistance on workshops, training programs, conferences, and seminars.
Assist in recruiting for all Metcalf Institute programs, including communicating with educational and professional organizations; researching new recruitment opportunities; composing innovative recruitment and conference materials and packages.
Conduct Internet searches and prepare summaries to assist Principal Investigator’s in the development and production of publications.
Monitor Metcalf Institute websites for user impact and outreach potential; track website statistics; research and prepare new content for the websites.
Maintain archiving systems for Metcalf Institute.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist Principal Investigators in performing background research for grant proposals.
Perform additional duties as required.
LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Personal computers, scanners, printers; word processing, database management and spreadsheet software.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Bachelor's degree in science, English, public relations/communications,
journalism or related field; experience in conducting literature searches using
resources such as the library and Internet; ability to perform independent
research and to provide written summaries of such; strong demonstrated skills
in writing, time-management, organization, and attention to detail; strong interpersonal
and oral and written communication skills, and a proactive, team approach to work;
proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel; proficiency with the Internet and
email; commitment to diversity. Preferred:
Communications and/or public relations experience; experience in marketing
strategy; non-profit fundraising experience; experience with database management
and graphing functions of Microsoft Excel; ability to research and identify
strategic use of resources.
