TITLE:                       Specialist, Technology Transfer

DIVISION:                 Division of Research and Economic Development          

 

REPORTS TO:           Assistant Vice President for Research, Intellectual Property Management and Commercialization

 

GRADE:                     13

                       

SUPERVISES:            Support staff 

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Assist the Assistant Vice President for Research in the following: advising faculty and students regarding intellectual property (IP); identifying, evaluating, marketing, protecting, licensing and commercializing IP; and evaluating the IP provisions of sponsored research agreements.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Advise faculty and students regarding IP, including increasing awareness of the URI technology transfer program (and its procedures and policies) and encouraging faculty and students to participate therein, via oral presentations and written materials.

 

Review, revise and negotiate the following:  Confidential Disclosure Agreements (CDAs), Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs); and IP provisions of sponsored research agreements.

 

Identify, evaluate, and work with outside counsel to protect new IP produced by URI faculty and students. Work with the URI Intellectual Property Committee (IPC) to determine IP rights.

 

Identify potential partners (especially those in Rhode Island and the region), and contact them regarding URI IP utilization, licensing, development and commercialization.

 

Evaluate licensing (e.g., Material Transfer Agreements (MTAs), patent and copyright license agreements, Inter-Institutional Agreements (IIAs), etc.) opportunities and inquiries that have been received from various companies and institutions, and negotiate licensing terms. Monitor licensees to determine if they are complying with license terms, and if needed, take action to bring them into compliance.    

 

Identify potential IP infringers, investigate alleged infringement and, if needed, take action to end the infringement.

 

Establish and maintain a service-oriented working relationship with customers, including URI administrators, URI creators of IP, and potential partners in businesses or in other institutions.

 

Work with the Assistant Vice President for Research and the Executive Director of the URI Research Foundation on the full spectrum of technology transfer duties.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform other duties as assigned.

 

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

           

Personal computers, printers, word processing, database management and spreadsheet software.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A bachelor of sciences degree with an MBA, or a graduate degree in a life or physical science is required.  Two years of experience in successfully licensing or developing intellectual property is equired.  Four years of such experience preferred.  The following are required:  excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills; ability to organize intellectual property information in an effective manner; ability to organize, coordinate and supervise support staff; computer proficiency in database management, spreadsheet, and word processing; commitment to diversity.

Salary Range: $57,155 - $72,151
