Position Description
TITLE: Assistant Vice President, Student Affairs, and Dean of Students
DIVISION: Student Affairs
REPORTS TO: Vice President, Student Affairs
GRADE: 18
SUPERVISES: Professional and Clerical Staff
BASIC FUNCTION:
Assume a leadership role for the Division of Student Affairs in realizing its vision of inclusion and student success as well as the University’s commitment to civility; serve as the primary Student Affairs liaison with Academic Affairs through participation on the Dean’s Council and through various collaborative student learning programs; provide leadership in advancing Division-wide excellence through research and assessment; provide strong advocacy for students and their programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Overall responsibility for the operation and budget functions of the Department of Student Life, including supervision of non-classified and classified staff, budget, and determination of goals and objectives.
Serve as liaison with State and local government agencies (for information requests, policy formulation, and planning), and with community service agencies (for referrals, program coordination, information-sharing, and consultation).
Conduct strategic planning with major areas within the Department of Student Life, establishing and monitoring goals for excellence.
Strongly advocate for students and their programs.
Provide overall direction for assessment, learning outcomes and co-curricular program development for the following student populations: commuter students, students with disabilities, graduate students, women students, GLBT students, multicultural students, non-traditional students and veterans.
Represent the Division and/or Vice President at various meetings and functions as directed by the Vice President.
Coordinate the University’s efforts to address students’ substance abuse issues.
Coordinate the programs and services of the
Coordinate the University Judicial System, including the development and publication of
community standards, student conduct policies and the adjudication of conduct complaints.
Coordinate programs and services for community organizations such as the Narragansett- URI Town/Gown Coalition.
Create partnerships with Academic Affairs to enhance retention, graduation and student learning.
Work closely with faculty and deans on issues such as cheating and plagiarism, class absences, unacceptable classroom conduct.
Serve as a member of the University’s Emergency Response Team and assume primary emergency on-call responsibilities in the absence of the Vice President.
Assist the Vice President in the overall management of the Division.
OTHER DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide liaison with other administrative and academic offices, and assistance to other department heads in policy making and program development.
Serve on University and Division committees.
Provide general problem-solving assistance to individual students and student groups.
Within area of responsibility, oversee adherence to rules, regulations and procedures mandated and/or recommended by the NCAA and University.
Perform additional duties as required.

EQUIPMENT:
Personal computers, printers; word processing, database management, and spreadsheet software.
ENVIRONMENTAL
CONDITIONS:
The incumbent is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Earned doctorate in college student personnel, higher education or a related field; eight years of progressively responsible student affairs experience at a higher education institution, with at least five years of supervisory leadership; documented evidence of success working with a diverse college student population, and of effective collaboration with academic affairs; demonstrated abilities in fiscal planning and management, student development theory, and personnel management and assessment; a collaborative, collegial management style and the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; demonstrated ability to organize, coordinate, and supervise support staff; ability to work with diverse groups; ability to interpret institutional policies to staff and others, and to prepare and present detailed studies and reports; strong interpersonal skills; ability to prepare and deliver oral presentations before small and large groups of people.
Preferred: Experience working in the following areas: disability services, student conduct, substance abuse prevention, commuter programs, Greek Affairs, women’s programs, violence prevention, parent programs, GLBT programs, and/or multicultural programs.
