Position Description
TITLE: Marine Research Assistant II
DIVISION: Academic

SUPERVISES:
BASIC FUNCTION:
Support research at and operation of the Marine Life
Research Facilities at the
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform a daily walk-through of the facilities to ensure specific systems are operating properly.
Tend seawater strainers and filters as required.
Perform certain scheduled operational routines, such as monthly switching of seawater delivery systems and weekly confirmation that alarm systems work.
Perform maintenance on flow-through freshwater systems as needed.
Maintain records of various seawater and freshwater delivery systems.
Assist in designing and implementing investigations using marine organisms and seawater facilities and freshwater organisms and freshwater flow-through systems.
Troubleshoot equipment and system malfunctions.
Use chemicals safely and in compliance with hazardous
materials regulations; maintain MSDS notebook and records.
OTHER DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform other duties as required.
LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Water quality test kits (dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, salinity, temperature, nitrogenous wastes); electric multi-meter; personal computers, printers.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
This position is subject to adverse environmental conditions due to working around seawater, electric circuits, chemicals and toxins and live animals, including sharks and bacteria.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: BS degree in biological sciences; two years of experience working in marine hatchery or wet lab; computer literacy, including ability to use Excel and Word software; ability to use water quality test kits (dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, salinity, temperature, nitrogenous wastes); ability to use electric multi-meter; familiarity with auto-dialer function; familiarity with principles and practices of electrical wiring, plumbing, carpentry and mechanical systems; positive interpersonal skills and team approach to work. Preferred: Familiarity with or willingness to learn monitoring and control systems; strong background in electrical work; experience in the maintenance, repair, or troubleshooting of aquaculture facilities and laboratory equipment.
