Position Description
TITLE: Academic Advisor
DIVISION: Student Affairs (Special Programs for Talent Development)
REPORTS TO: Director, Special Programs for Talent Development
GRADE: 10
SUPERVISES: Professional and other support staff
BASIC FUNCTION:
Provide academic advising on an individual and group basis for students in Special Programs for Talent Development (SPTD). Insure that TD students progress toward graduation in a timely and systematic way. Carry out major Talent Development admissions responsibilities assigned by the Director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide academic advisement for multi-racial, multi-cultural students.
Hold weekly individual and group meetings with Talent Development students, specifically fresh persons.
Hold mid-semester evaluations with TD students.
Conduct Talent Development recruitment/outreach
informational and instructional presentations to large and small audiences at
Interview, advise, and counsel individual Talent Development candidates and parents regarding Talent Development admissions procedures and guidelines.
Serve as TD’s readmission advisor. Maintain contact with former academically-challenged TD students and establish procedures for individual readmission.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Serve as head advisor for the Pre-Matriculation Program or teach Pre-Matriculation non-credited courses.
Perform other duties as assigned.
LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Personal computers, printers, and word processing, database management, and spreadsheet software. Knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Unix-type computer operating environments; demostrated ability to use and teach Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access) and Internet applications; knowledge of the design and operation of relational databases including Microsoft Access; demonstrated ability to produce Microsoft PowerPoint presentations incorporating sound, graphics, and video; demonstrated ability to design and manage a World Wide Web site; demonstrated experience in maintaining a listserv discussion group; knowledge of personal computer hardware.

CONDITIONS:
This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Master's degree in college
student personnel, counseling, education or related field required. Minimum of two years' experience required, one year of which is in academic advising at a
college or university, and one year of work experience in a selective college
or university admissions office. The following are also required: demonstrated
experience with varied racial and cultural groups in higher education; strong
public speaking skills, in front of both small and large groups; demonstrated
management skills; demonstrated ability to use Microsoft Office applications
(Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access) and Internet applications; demonstrated
ability to produce Microsoft PowerPoint presentations; ability to communicate
effectively verbally and in writing; ability to organize, coordinate and
supervise support staff; strong interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to conduct tutorials in
Microsoft Office and Internet applications preferred. Preference will be given to applicants with
bilingual skills.
