Position Description

TITLE:                   Manager, Peckham Farm

 

DIVISION:             Academic Affairs (CELS)

 

REPORTS TO:    Chair, Fisheries, Animal & Veterinary Sciences Department

 

GRADE:                  10                   

 

SUPERVISES:     Students and other workers

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

Responsible for implementation of the protocols for animal husbandry approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), and for being a primary observer of animal health, cooperating with and contacting the University Veterinarian for delivery of veterinary care services.  Work cooperatively with the University Veterinarian to assure that the animal husbandry plans and procedures are in harmony with the established veterinary care plan for University livestock.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Ensure that all animal stalls and pens are cleaned daily and that bedding is changed periodically to maintain animal health and facility aesthetics.

Supervise students and other workers assigned to perform tasks related to animal care and the support of agronomic activities at Peckham Farm.

 

Ensure that the purchase of supplies is adequate for the proper care and maintenance of livestock at Peckham Farm.

 

Ensure that all animal-rearing facilities and equipment are in good operating condition, consistent with established safety standards and with the use of the farm as a teaching and demonstration facility for students, Extension Cooperators and the general public.

 

Follow the directives of the University Veterinarian in matters impacting animal health and well-being.

 

Strive to continually develop the farm to become as economically self-sufficient as possible within the constraints of being a “showcase” demonstration facility, exercising strategies for achieving a degree of economic self-sufficiency including, but not limited to:

 

a)                  Sale of livestock

b)                  Stud fees

c)                  Development of pastureland for production of hay and forage crops

d)                  Development of noval agronomic and animal husbandry integration

e)                  Continual development of noval and cost-effective animal management strategies


OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Assist in supervisory duties related to research programs conducted at Peckham Farm or elsewhere as assigned.

 

Conduct instructional and outreach programs in Animal Science as assigned.

 

Comply with directives of the Chairperson of the Department of Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Science.

 

Perform other duties as required.

           

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

 

Personal computers, printers; word processing, database management and spreadsheet software; farm tools and equipment.  All certifications required to comply with USDA and University animal care regulations.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in animal science or closely related field required; master’s degree preferred.  Must possess and maintain an American Association for Laboratory Science or American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists certification or the ability to be certified within one year of employment to comply with USDA and University animal care regulations.  The following are also required:  ability to operate a tractor with front-loading bucket; experience with domestic hoofed livestock; excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively supervise support staff; strong communication skills, both written and verbal; ability to work with diverse groups.  Preference will be given to individuals with prior hands-on animal husbandry and physical farm management activities.

Salary Range: $45,745 - $57,232
