Title: Marine Research Specialist I

Supervises: Undergraduate Students and Interns
Basic Function:
Conduct independent research and
assist with the implementation of marine and environmental science research,
education, and outreach programs of the Office of Marine Programs and the
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist the Office of Marine Programs and
• carrying out a variety of research and education initiatives of the Office of Marine Programs, including activities associated with the Census of Marine Life, a ten-year research initiative to assess the diversity, distribution, and abundance of marine life in the world’s oceans, the ARMADA research and mentoring experiences for teachers project, and the Coastal Institute Visitor Center’s Coastal Institute Bookstore and exhibit; and the Inner Space Center’s Middle School Marine Science Initiative, an effort to introduce marine exploration and science content into middle schools via innovative telepresence technology, and education and outreach activities associated with NOAA’s Ocean Exploration Vessel OKEANOS, National Marine Sanctuaries Oceans Live project, and Port Security and Maritime Resilience research projects;
•
disseminating research results and education and outreach products (e.g.,
newsletters, curriculum materials, websites, blogs,
etc.) associated with Office of Marine Programs and Inner Space Center research
projects and activities;
• updating of marine-oriented science websites, databases, and exhibits for the Office of Marine Programs and Inner Space Center, as well as the Census of Marine Life, Oceans Live, and other initiatives;
• gathering data and information to support Office of Marine Programs and Inner Space Center research projects, and conducting literature reviews and searches as required to support proposal development;
• coordinating and executing workshops, training and interpretive programs, lectures, public programs, presentations, conferences, and short courses delivered through the Narragansett Bay Classroom and Inner Space Classroom;
• developing research, promotional, and educational materials for training programs, teacher institutes, professional development programs, and classroom use;
• developing research proposals and implementing new initiatives;
• creating program reports and meeting logistical needs of projects and programs.

Personal computers, printers, digital equipment and software.
Environmental Conditions:
No exposure to extreme environmental conditions. However, must be able to
actively participate in field- or shipboard- activities.
Qualifications:
Required: Bachelor’s degree in a marine science or marine policy discipline; experience in research methods in field of experience, including literature and database searches; ability to organize, coordinate, and supervise students and interns; demonstrated experience with personal computers and digital cameras, and with graphics, word processing, web content management, and spreadsheet software; experience with field and laboratory equipment; excellent verbal and written communications skills; strong interpersonal skills, and ability to work with diverse groups of people. Must provide own transportation to off-campus locations as needed.
