Position Description
POSITION IS LIMITED TO 12/19/09 WITH EXTENSION
CONTINGENT ON FUNDING.
Title: Marine Research Specialist I
Division: Academic Affairs (
Reports to: Director, Office of Marine Programs and Marine Research Specialist III and Marine Research Associate II
Grade: 5
Supervises: Undergraduate Students and Interns
Basic Function:
Conduct independent research and assist with the implementation of marine and environmental science research, education, and outreach programs of the Office of Marine Programs.
Duties and
Responsibilities:
Assist the Office of Marine Programs Director, Marine Research Specialist III and Marine Research Associate II with:
• carrying out a variety of research and education initiatives of the Office of Marine Programs, including activities associated with the Census of Marine Life, a ten-year research initiative to assess the diversity, distribution, and abundance of marine life in the world’s oceans; the ARMADA Project, providing research and mentoring experiences for teachers; and the Coastal Institute Visitor Center;
• developing frameworks, structures, navigation, maintenance, and updating for websites associated with externally-funded research projects, including the Census of Marine Life and ARMADA Project;
• gathering data and information to support Office of Marine Programs research projects, and conducting literature reviews and searches as required to support proposal development;
• designing and maintaining an image management system to support Office of Marine Programs research project image galleries (e.g., photographs, maps, illustrations, etc.) and video galleries;
• compiling and developing ocean science content for print and electronic publications, newsletters, workshops and institutes, and professional development programs;
• disseminating the results and products (e.g., newsletters, curriculum materials, websites, blogs, etc.) of the Office of Marine Programs research and education projects.

Equipment:
Personal computers, printers, scanners, digital still and video cameras, graphics software, image management software, and web development software.
Environmental Conditions:
This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
Qualifications:
Required: Bachelor’s degree in marine science, ocean engineering, or computer science; experience with research methods in field of expertise, including literature and database searches; ability to organize, coordinate, and supervise students and interns; demonstrated proficiency with Drupal content management system, web/database software, and image management system software; working knowledge of scripting languages and cascading style sheets; experience with computer graphics, layout, and design of content-rich websites and with computer application troubleshooting; excellent verbal and written communications skills; strong interpersonal skills, and ability to work with diverse groups of people. Must provide own transportation to off-campus locations as needed.
