Position Description

POSITION IS LIMITED TO 1/31/10 WITH EXTENSION CONTINGENT ON FUNDING.

TITLE:                               Research Assistant I

 

DIVISION:                    Academic Affairs (College of the Environment and Life Sciences - FAVS)        

 

REPORTS TO:                Principal Investigator

 

GRADE:                            1

 

SUPERVISES:             

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Under direct supervision, support research evaluating Turtle Excluded Devices (TEDs) in trawl fisheries.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Under direct supervision, participate in the collection of fisheries field data on fishing vessels.

 

Assist with the following:

 

·        describing the catch of commercial fishing vessels

·        identifying commercially-valuable fish species

·        enumerating, weighing, and measuring lengths of fish

·        operating underwater video cameras to record fish behavior in the vicinity of fishing gear

·        entering field data into EXCEL spreadsheets

·        conducting statistical analyses of the data

·        preparing reports for funding agencies, including recommending improvements of sea sampling procedures

·        training undergraduate students in field sampling procedures aboard fishing vessels

·        maintaining field equipment used to conduct at-sea fisheries sampling aboard fishing vessels

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Perform other duties as required.

 

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

 

Personal computers, printers; word processing, database and spreadsheet software; relevant laboratory instruments.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

The incumbent is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

                       

Required:  Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries technology; coursework in fishing gear technology; up to one year of experience which includes field sampling aboard commercial fishing vessels using TEDs, and sea sampling or observing fisheries operations aboard commercial fishing vessels; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing; excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups. Preferred: Recent certification as a National Marine Fisheries Service fisheries observer or sea sampler.
