Position Description
TITLE:
Lead Database Support Technologist, UCS/Database
Services
DIVISION: Academic Affairs (ITS/UCS)
REPORTS TO: Manager, University Computing Systems/Database Services
GRADE: 14
SUPERVISES: Technical Staff
BASIC FUNCTION:
Install, configure, and maintain databases and product software, and integrate these with the operating systems in support of information technology university-wide.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Install, upgrade, integrate and maintain the University’s databases and product software with all related applications.
Install, upgrade, integrate and maintain product software using the University’s current databases with the multiple operating systems and hardware.
Integrate databases, product software, operating systems, email, virtual and individual systems environments and the communications required between them.
Maintain database standards, security, and data integrity.
Manage all environments with a focus on the Oracle/Unix environment (i.e., production, test, quality assurance, demo, installation, upgrades, and integration with all databases).
Execute backup and restore procedures for all databases and regularly monitor and tune databases for optimal performance.
Troubleshoot and resolve all problems related to the various environments.
Participate in evaluation of products designed to maintain and integrate the databases, applications, and operating systems supporting all products.
Coordinate maintenance with other information technology and end-user units of the University.
OTHER DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintain proficiency in the support, installation,
maintenance, and system performance of databases and systems used within the
University.
Participate in the evaluation of applications and their relationship to the University’s technical environments.
Perform other related duties as required or as assigned by the Manager or Director, UCS.
LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Personal computer and printer; Windows and Unix operating system platforms; Oracle database or PeopleSoft application product support; occasional evening and/or weekend work.
ENVIRONMENTAL
CONDITIONS:
This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED: Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of four
years of experience with Oracle databases in a Unix environment (at least two
years of this experience must include Oracle database administration (DBA) and
application integration); or an Associate’s degree and a minimum of six
years of experience with Oracle databases in a Unix environment (at least three
years of this experience must include Oracle database administration (DBA) and
application integration; working knowledge of Windows environment; demonstrated
project management skills; ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in
writing, and to work with diverse groups; strong interpersonal and
problem-solving skills. PREFERRED: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer
science or computer information systems; experience with implementing and
supporting the products related to PeopleSoft ERP applications in a Unix
environment; experience with technologies necessary to integrate the various
environments and applications (PeopleSoft, MS-Exchange, Email, Virtual Servers,
WEB Services, WebLogic, Tuxedo, SQR, Crystal Reports,
and performance monitoring tools).
