CONTINGENT ON FUNDING.
TITLE: Research Assistant III
DIVISION: Academic
Affairs (CELS: Natural Resources Science)
REPORTS TO: Principal Investigator
GRADE: 5
SUPERVISES: Field assistant(s)
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under direction of
the Principal Investigator, conduct inland and offshore avian surveys of Block
Island Sound.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct inland and
offshore avian surveys in Block Island Sound.
Conduct boat-based
and aerial surveys of waterbirds in Block Island
Sound.
Supervise field
assistants conducting avian surveys.
Enter survey data
into database.
Assist with analysis
of survey data.
OTHER DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist with writing final report.
Perform additional duties as required.
LICENSES, TOOLS AND
EQUIPMENT:
Personal
computers, printers; word processing, database management, and spreadsheet
software.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental
conditions. However, survey work
requires performing offshore surveys from a boat and performing extended
surveys in a small plane.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Bachelor’s degree in ornithology, wildlife
biology, environmental sciences, or a related degree; three years of experience
in performing ornithological surveys; ability to perform offshore surveys from
a boat and small plane; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in
writing; ability to supervise field assistants; strong interpersonal skills and
ability to work with diverse population.
Preferred: Experience
conducting boat-based avian surveys in pelagic areas; experience conducting
aerial surveys over pelagic habitats; experience surveying offshore water birds
of
