Position Description
This position is part-time (12 hrs/week), limited to
7/31/10 with extension contingent on funding.
TITLE: Marine Research Specialist III
DIVISION: Academic Affairs -
REPORTS TO: Principal Investigator
GRADE: 9
SUPERVISES: May supervise support staff
BASIC FUNCTION:
Perform experimental and developmental work in support of major research programs. Responsible for the planning and management of significant experimental/research programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Use established analytical, experimental and investigative methods and techniques using gas chromatography, with minor modifications and adaptations.
Collect, process, monitor and analyze samples and/or data linked to organic compounds in air, water, sediment and soil.
Maintain laboratory for conformance with research priorities.
Develop and deploy scientific equipment for the collection of organic trace compounds in water and atmosphere, and program the equipment where appropriate.
Prepare and publish manuscripts containing results of research efforts.
Develop experimental procedures and techniques for resolution of unique scientific/research problems.
Assist in supervisory and administrative duties related to research programs.
Provide guidance and assistance to graduate students.
OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform additional duties as required.
LICENSES, TOOLS & EQUIPMENT:
Personal computers, printers; word processing, database management, and spreadsheet software; programming of OOPIC, running and maintenance of GC-FID, GC-MS, GC-ECD, and general laboratory equipment.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Bachelor’s degree
in Chemical Oceanography, Chemistry, or related field; minimum of four years of
relevant research experience which includes expertise in a broad or intense
area of research specialization; strong written and oral communication skills
and organizational skills; strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with
diverse population; ability to supervise. Additional experience must include:
experience with organic trace analysis using gas chromatography. Must be able to work at sea
as needed. Preferred: Experience in ocean engineering/ocean-based
sampling platforms; experience in programming of OOPIC microprocessors.
