                        Position Description

 

TITLE:            Associate Marine Research Scientist

 

DIVISION:         Academic Affairs (Graduate School of Oceanography)

 

REPORTS TO:       Principal Investigator and/or Dean

 

GRADE:            16

 

SUPERVISES:      

 

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Perform basic or applied research of an advanced and independent nature on physical oceanographic problems which present critical or difficult obstacles to understanding.  Serve as principal investigator or co-principal investigator on grants and contracts, obtaining the necessary funding to carry on his/her research.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Perform advanced research on physical processes in the ocean; developing new theories and methods for attaining understanding of physical processes in the ocean.

 

Develop research programs incorporating dynamical interpretation of oceanographic data and assimilating these data into numerical geophysical models.

 

Independently responsible to obtain research funding to support his/her research.

 

Author peer-reviewed professional scientific articles in physical oceanography and all other grant-associated reports and articles.

 

Orally present the results of the above studies at scientific meetings.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Perform other duties as required.


LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

 

Personal computers, printers and word processing, database management and spreadsheet software.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Ph.D with at least five years professional experience in Physical Oceanography at the Assistant Marine Research Scientist level or equivalent required.  Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research required.  Also required is a strong background in geophysical fluid dynamics, as evidenced by a history of publications which have had national or international impact and value in physical oceanography.
