                        Position Description

 

TITLE:            Associate Marine Scientist

 

DIVISION:         Academic Affairs (Graduate School of Oceanography)

 

REPORTS TO:       Vice Provost, Marine Affairs/Dean GSO

 

GRADE:            16

 

SUPERVISES:       Support staff

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Conduct marine scientific research at a level of skill usually associated with an associate professor of oceanography.  Develop research proposals.  Supervise technical staff, write and publish results of the research.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform other duties as required.

     

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

 

Personal computers, printers, word processing, database management and spreadsheet software.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

This position is/is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Ph.D. in oceanography or a related discipline required, as is a minimum of six years of increasing experience and skill as evidenced by professional publication or similar examples of achievement.  This position requires that the incumbent possess the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Must be able to organize, coordinate and supervise support staff.
