Position Description

 

TITLE:                                   Athletic Therapist

 

DIVISION:                            Student Affairs

 

REPORTS TO:                      Director, Athletics and Team Physician

 

GRADE:                                 12

 

SUPERVISES:                       Support staff

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Responsible for the prevention, care and rehabilitation of athletic injuries to those athletes involved in intercollegiate athletics at the University of Rhode Island; supervision and operation of the Keaney Training Room and the Field House Training Room.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Work under the direct supervision of the team physician with regard to athletic injuries and their management; recognize and recondition athletic injuries of University of Rhode Island Intercollegiate athletes, both male and female; provide first aid service to participants of the physical education classes, club sports, and intramural activities.

 

Work with the team physician with regard to special matters and problems in the Sports Medicine Department.

 

Organize, supervise, and manage the co-educational athletic treatment center and the field house training room; provide athletic training coverage for those events sanctioned by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at The University of Rhode Island.  Train and supervise staff, graduate assistant and student athletic trainers.

 

Serve as liaison to the team physician, consulting physicians, coaching staff, athletes, and athletic department administration regarding athletic injuries and other related special problems.

 

Supervise and organize the purchasing of equipment and supplies necessary for the operation of the Sports Medicine Department.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Assist with the planning, preparation, and the monitoring of the operational budget of the Sports Medicine Department.

 

Coordinate the Drug Prevention and Education Program for the Department of Athletics (athletes and staff).

 

Foster professional growth within the athletic training staff by attending seminars, conventions and clinics on sports medicine.

 

Perform other duties as assigned.

 

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Master's degree, certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association and quality professional experiences are required; must be eligible for Rhode Island licensure.  This position requires that the incumbent possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.  Must be able to organize, coordinate and supervise support staff.  Must be able to interpret institutional policies, plans, objectives, rules and regulations and communicate the interpretation to subordinates and others.  Must be able to prepare and present detailed studies and reports to include recommendations concerning the substance of the studies and reports.  Must possess strong interpersonal skills.  Must be able to prepare and deliver oral presentations before small, medium and large groups of people.  Incumbent must possess the ability to speak effectively before faculty and administrative staff members on assigned work and related subjects.
