  Position Description

 

 

TITLE:            Information Technologist/Senior Information Technologist

 

DIVISION:         College of Environment and Life Sciences (ENRE)

 

REPORTS TO:       Simlab Director (Faculty Member) and Principal Investigators

 

GRADE:            10/12

 

SUPERVISES:       Student employees

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Work as part of a research team to design, program and maintain custom computer applications for research on decision-making and policy analysis in the Department of Environmental and Natural Resouce Economics' Policy Simulation Laboratory.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Design new and adapt existing applications to the specific needs of the research team, as directed by project team leaders.

 

Design applications to collect decision information from client computers (LAN or web), store and manipulate them on a server, and return results to all clients.

 

Develop new applications using Windows Java, Visual Basic or other appropriate development tools; adapt legacy programs developed in Java.

 

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Provide general hardware and software maintenance for the Policy Simulation Laboratory.

 

Maintain a high level of understanding of current developments in the assigned area of responsibility and anticipate future needs.

 

Other research functions such as statistical analysis, public survey administration as needed by project leaders.

 

Perform additional duties as required.

 

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

 

Personal computers, Windows application development tools such as Java, Visual Basic and C/C++.

 

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field required at the Senior Information Technologist level.  At the Information Technologist level, a bachelor's degree in computer science or related field, or an equivalent combination of post-secondary education and additional experience is required.  (Master’s degree preferred for Senior Information Technologist.)  The following are required:  1 year of experience (2 for Senior IT) in a software development position or 2 years' experience (4 for Senior IT) in a position that included a substantial amount of software development work.  Must be proficient in one or more programming languages.  Must be able to design robust code and document code.  Must possess strong interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with project team leaders and students.  Experience with the following preferred:  Java; C/C++; Visual Basic; network toolbox development; scripting languages, html; project team supervision; robust software design and maintenance; LAN application development; web-based application development; user interface design; Access or other databases; statistical data analysis; simulation modeling; numerical optimization; public communication skills; conducting public surveys; economics or policy analysis; Windows technical support.
