                                Position Description

 

 

TITLE:            Marine Research Specialist I

 

DIVISION:         Academic Affairs (GSO)

 

REPORTS TO:       Principal Investigator and/or Research Staff

 

GRADE:            05

 

SUPERVISES:       Assist in supervision of others assigned to the project

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Perform experimental and developmental work in support of a study on the levels of organic contaminants in samples of organisms and sediments from lakes and estuaries.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Use established analytical methods to extract, fractionate and analyze organic contaminants in samples.

 

Perform computer analyses of data.

 

Modify existing methods to improve precision and sensitivity of analyses.

 

Maintain organic geochemistry laboratory for the research studies.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT IN THE ORGANIC GEOCHEMISTRY LAB:

 

Personal computers, printers and word processing, database management and spreadsheet software, gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. 

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

This position is subject to both inside and outside work and extreme cold and hot temperatures can be encountered in this position.


QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Bachelor’ degree in a science required (chemistry and chemical oceanography degree preferred.  Previous experience in an organic chemistry laboratory, as well as previous experience with analysis of organic contaminants using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry required.  Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and to work out-of-doors.  Must have a valid driver’s license.  Must be able to coordinate and supervise support staff.
