TITLE:            Technician II

 

DIVISION:         Academic Affairs     

 

REPORTS TO:

 

GRADE:            9

 

SUPERVISES:       Technical and clerical support staff

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Assist in the conduct of independent, scientific research with practical applications; assist in the coordination of activities of graduate assistants in these areas.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Supervise the operation of an electron microscope facility.

 

Maintain electron microscope and maintain and repair associated electrical and preparative equipment.

 

Prepare material for transmission and scanning electron microscopy and perform ultramicrotomy.

 

Photograph and prepare material for publication and supervise the darkroom facility.

 

Train and supervise other technical personnel in basic technique and use of equipment.

 

Outline and conduct experiments and prepare results for analysis and publication.

 

Provide advice to faculty and staff; consult with outside commercial and institutional organizations.

 

Assist in conduct of laboratory and field research; engage in equipment design and construction, maintain existing research gear and equipment.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Perform data analysis and writing; prepare budgets, proposals, and reports pertinent to research activities.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences.  Experience and training in electron microscopy and familiarity with basic electron microscope techniques.  Competency in ultramicrotomy.  Thorough working knowledge of bioacoustics, fish behavior, and scientific instrumentation.  This position requires that the incumbent possess the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.  Must be able to organize, coordinate and supervise support staff and be able to interpret institution policies, plans, objectives, rules and regulations and communicate the interpretation to subordinates and others.  Must be able to prepare and present detailed studies and reports to include recommendations concerning the substance of the studies and reports.  Must possess strong interpersonal skills.
