                             Position Description

 

 

 

TITLE:            Technician III (Industrial & Systems Engineering)

 

DIVISION:         Academic Affairs (College of Engineering: Industrial & Systems Engineering)

 

REPORTS TO:       Department Chair

 

GRADE:            11

 

SUPERVISES:       Extensive laboratories and all users of those facilities

 

Basic Function:

 

Support major laboratories located in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, including the services to the building, a wide variety of machine tools, a casting foundry and associated test equipment.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Maintain laboratory space and services and equipment. (Equipment currently includes: furnaces; milling, turning, drilling and grinding machines; an injection molding machine; rapid prototyping plastic deposition and table-top CNC mills and lathes; a variety of precision measuring machines and devices; varied instrumentation for measuring forces, surface wear, power consumption etc.)

 

Assist in the oversight and instruction of undergraduate and graduate students in conventional manufacturing and rapid prototyping of parts, fixtures, test components and so on, associated with laboratory exercises and course projects.

 

Supervise undergraduate manufacturing laboratory work and engineering design prototyping tasks, which are part of the academic curricula and capstone design initiatives of both the ISE and MCE Departments.

 

Advise on the need for equipment enhancements, updates or necessary changes and identify and arrange the supply of necessary consumables for laboratory operation.

 

Ensure safe procedures are always carried out in all aspects of the laboratory operation.

 

Organize the laboratory for prospective new student and industrial visits.

 

Help to identify equipment and procedures which may be required to solve new teaching needs.

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

 

Operating machine tools and computer numerical control (CNC) of machine tools, computers and instrumentation.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

Ensure safe transport, storage, use and disposal of any potentially harmful materials which may be required for part manufacture.  Supervise all laboratory work involving use of potentially harmful materials.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required: A bachelor’s or associate’s degree in engineering, engineering technology or related technical area and relevant professional experience in industry or a technical laboratory, or a high school diploma and technical background gained by a combination of college level course work, professional level course work, professional apprenticeship, and 3 or more years of industrial or technical laboratory experience; experience with operating machine tools; ability to organize, coordinate and supervise students and/or support staff; strong interpersonal skills and verbal and written communication skills; strong desire to learn new technologies. Preferred: some knowledge of computer numerical control (CNC) of machine tools, computers and instrumentation.
