JOB DESCRIPTION
CLASS TITLE: MASON
CLASS DEFINITION:
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
To perform masonry and cement work using bricks, stoen, cement and other materials, in the construction, alteration, maintenance and repair of buildings and other various structures; and to do related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Receives work assignments from a superior with considerable latitude for the use of independent judgment in the application of the practices and techniques of the trade; work is reviewed usually upon completion for satisfactory performance.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
To construct, alter, maintain and repair structures, foundations, floors, walks and walls, using brick, stone, tile and other masonry materials where required.
To build manholes and catch basins.
To cut holes in stone, cement or other materials.
To repair sewer lines.
To pave gutters and slow drainage systems.
To make cement blocks, bricks and posts.
To cover steam pipes and fittings.
To waterproof exterior and interior structures.
To mix and place concrete in forms and do cement finishings.
To erect and climb scaffolding for repairs.
To make minor plaster repairs.
As required, to operate air tolls.
To do related work as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES:
A thorough knowledge of the practices, techniques, tools, equipment and materials used in masonry and skill in the application of such practices and techniques; a working knowledge of safety measures and precautions; a familiarity with related trades; skill in the use and care of masonry tools and equipment; skill in laying bricks, stones and title and the ability to mix mortar and cement; skill in working and finishing cement; the ability to follow oral and written instructions; the ability to work from plans and specifications; and related capacities and abilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
EDUCATION:
Such as may have been gained through: completion of eight school grades; and
EXPERIENCE:
Such as may have been gained through: employment as a journeyman mason.
Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.
