CLASS TITLE:     PAINTER SUPERVISOR

CLASS DEFINITION:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

As a working supervisor, to lay out, supervise, and participate in the work of a group of skilled painters applying protective and decorative coatings to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and structures; and to do related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the general direction of a superior from whom assignments are received; work is reviewed usually upon completion.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Supervises the work of one or more painters; gives instructions in practices and techniques when necessary; inspects work in process and upon completion for conformance to instructions and techniques of the trade.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

To supervise, lay out and assign the work of a group of painters.

To be responsible for the assembling and checking of adequate materials, tools and equipment for the work at hand.

As need arises, to do all tasks usually performed by skilled painters such as: mixing paints, sizes, varnishes, enamels, lacquers, calcimines and paint and varnish removers; washing and removing paint; washing and cleaning surfaces preparatory to painting; mixing and matching colors; cutting and setting glass; stripping, restraining, filling, shellacking and varnishing desks, tables and other furniture; preparing floors for painting and waxing; paper hanging; building scaffoldings; keeping tools and brushes in good condition; and erecting and climbing scaffoldings for interior and exterior work.

To do minor plaster repairs, spackling, and dry wall taping.

To supervise, instruct in, and occasionally perform, the more difficult and highly skilled techniques of the trade.

To be responsible for preparing estimates of costs, requisitioning supplies, keeping time and materials records and other records and reports.

To do related work as required.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES:

A thorough knowledge of practices, techniques, tools, equipment and materials used in interior and exterior surface painting; a working knowledge of various kinds of paints, varnishes, shellacs, lacquers and calcimines, their adaptability and uses; a working knowledge of safety measures and precautions; skill in mixing and matching paint; skill in the application of paints and other finishes with brush or spray gun; the ability to lay out work from plans and specifications and supervise the work of subordinates; the ability to make estimates of materials and labor costs for painting projects; and related capacities and abilities

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

EDUCATION:

Such as may have been gained through:  completion of ten school grades; and

EXPERIENCE:

Such as may have been gained through: employment as a skilled painter.

Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.
