Welcome

Below is information to assist you as you join the University of Rhode Island staff. You will be receiving a new hire packet once your department notifies Human Resources of your appointment. Your packet will contain personnel as well as benefit forms that you will need to complete. Also in the packet will be either a Non-classified Wecome memo or a Classified Welcome memo to assist you in completing your forms and making your decisions regarding your benefits.

 If you are being hired in a:

  • Non-classified position:
    These include faculty, various professional and executive/administrative positions.
  • Classified position:

    These primarily include service/maintenance/dining, clerical support positions, nurses and various technical/para-professional positions.

  • Postdoctoral Fellow Appointments
    Instructions for hiring, as well as benefit and salary information

 

 

 Required Employment Personnel Forms:
These forms will be included in your new hire packet
  • Non-Classified Application Form for Employment – USP 17 (for Non-Classified employees only)
  • I-9 Form: You will be required to provide proof of legal authorization to work in the U.S. through the forms of identification as outline in the List of Acceptable Documents. Please note that paychecks cannot be processed if an I-9 form is not completed.
  • Drug Free Work Place Policy Acknowledgement
  • Bar of Claims Forms
  • W-4 Form 2013
  • CS-14 State of RI Application (Classified employees only)
  • Criminal Background Verification
    URI has partnered with HireRight to conduct national pre-employment background screening for all new hires. 
    Please note that you will receive an e-mail from Human Resources instructing you to sign in and provide pertinent information in order for HireRight to conduct a national background check. (The sign-on and password information will be provided to you in the e-mail.)
    Once you have signed on and provide the required information, HireRight will complete the background investigation and report back to Human Resources.  Employment is not final until Human Resources receives and approves a review of the background check.

 Employee Photo Identification Card:

You may obtain an Employee Photo Identification Card from the ID & Dining office, room 216, in the Memorial Union upon Human Resources' receipt of your approved appointment form. Once you have your employee identification card, you may then obtain a parking pass from Parking Services at 44 Lower College Road.


 Social Security Card:

Need a Social Security card or change your name on your existing one? A representative from Social Security Administration is available at the Oliver Stedman Government Center in Wakefield (Rm 109) the 2nd and 4th Thursday from 8:30am to 2:00pm or visit www.socialsecurity.gov/ssnumber/.

 E-mail Account:

Once you have been issued an Employee ID, it is recommended that you obtain an e-mail account through e-campus.

 


 Benefits at a glance:

Classified positions fall under the State of RI Civil Service System and primarily include the University's service/ maintenance/ dining positions, clerical support positions, nurses, and various technical / para-professional positions. The University in many instances must give preference to civil service candidates on a list or qualified union members with seniority.

Non-Classified positions include faculty and various professional and executive / administrative staff positions
 Enroll in Employee Benefits within 30 days of appointment:

After you receive your new hire packet containing the personnel and benefit forms, you should complete the forms and call one of the personnel representatives listed above for an appointment. Both a personnel and benefits representative will review your forms with you at your scheduled appointment. Additional benefits information can be found at the HR web site.


 Attend New Employee Orientation:

Orientations are held every other month in the Multi-Cultural Center, Lower College Road. You will be contacted by Human Resources with a date to attend this very informative session. Presenters include representatives from Human Resources, Police/Security, Media & Technology, and Affirmative Action.


 Ask questions:

If you have questions regarding your work hours, lunch time, where the restrooms are, the break room, is there a dress code, who do I notify if I am late or sick… ask your supervisor. He/she will be happy to supply you with all the details regarding your job.


 Injury on the Job:

Be sure to notify your supervisor of any injury/incident. A 24 hour notification form must be completed by your supervisor and faxed to Leslie Cronan in HR at 874-5530.
In addition, a URI Injury/Incident Report must be completed by both you and your supervisor and sent to Human Resources as quickly as possible so that you can get the care that you may need.
