To provide employees with a work environment free from the unlawful manufacture,
dispensing, possession or use of controlled substances.
II. APPLICABLE TO:
All employees, including classified and non-classified faculty, staff and students.
It is the responsibility of an employee to notify the Office of Human
Resource Administration within
five calendar days of a conviction in the workplace for violation of any criminal drug statute. Student
employees must notify the Office of Student Financial Aid of such convictions. Workplace shall be
understood to include all campuses of the University, all University facilities and vessels. A schedule
of controlled substances is available in the Office of Human Resource Administration.
It is the responsibility of the Office of Research, in conjunction with the
Office of Human Resource
Administration, to notify the federal contracting or granting agency within 10 days after receiving notice
from an employee or student of a conviction in the workplace for violation of any criminal drug
statute. Such notification applies to all employees who provisions of a federally sponsored grant or contract.
It is the responsibility of the Office of Human Resource Administration to
advise employees on the
availability of drug counseling and rehabilitation services through the Lifewatch Employee Assistance Program,
and their individual health insurance providers. The Office of Student Financial Aid will advise students of available

disciplinary action to enforce this policy.
The University of Rhode Island prohibits the unlawful manufacture, distribution,
or use of controlled substances by its employees and students in the workplace. The University will make
a good faith effort to continue to maintain a drug-free workplace. Sanctions against employees or students
for workplace drug violations range from oral warnings, up to, and including termination of employment,
and/or requiring such employees or students to participate satisfactorily in an approved drug abuse
assistance or rehabilitation program.
The Office of Research, Human Resource Administration and Student Financial Aid,
provide all federal grant/contract principal and co-principal investigators, employees and students with
a copy of the Drug-Free Workplace Policy.
