Certification Extensions

English as a Second Language (ESL)

The certification extension for ESL matches the grade levels of the teacher’s first certification (e.g. Early Childhood, Elementary, or Secondary). Teachers who hold Rhode Island Teacher Certification in Secondary English, Foreign Languages, History/Social Studies, Math, and Science may teach their subject content area to Limited English Proficient students with the ESL certification extension.

 

Requirements for ESL Certification Extensions:

Students interested in teacher certification in ESL or a certication extension to teach ESL in states other than Rhode Island should check with that state's department of teacher certification to ascertain the requirements.  Only individuals holding a current Rhode Island teacher certification are eligible for certification extensions in ESL by completing RI state requirements.
