The certification extension for ESL matches the grade levels of the teacher’s first certification (e.g. Early Childhood, Elementary, or Secondary). Teachers who hold Rhode Island Teacher Certification in Secondary English, Foreign Languages, History/Social Studies, Math, and Science may teach their subject content area to Limited English Proficient students with the ESL certification extension.
Requirements for ESL Certification Extensions:
Undergraduate or graduate students enrolled at URI in one of the programs listed above may complete the required coursework for the ESL certification; typically the practicum occurs directly after student teaching. Individuals holding a current Rhode Island teacher certification are also eligible for certification extensions in ESL by completing RI state requirements. Students interested in teacher certification in ESL or a certification extension to teach ESL in states other than Rhode Island should check with that state's department of education to ascertain the requirements.
For more information, students or teachers should contact the Office of Teacher Education, 701 Chafee Building, University of Rhode Island, Kingston, RI. Phone: (401) 874-5930.
