Special Endorsements

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Overview:Girls discussing at a table

There are two different endorsements for English as a Second Language. The endorsement for teachers who hold Rhode Island Teacher Certification in Elementary, Early Childhood, Secondary English, or Foreign Languages may teach in an ESL classroom that matches their certification. The endorsement for teachers who hold Rhode Island Teacher Certification in Secondary History/Social Studies, Math, and Science may teach their subject content area to Limited English Proficient students.

Requirements for ESL Endorsement:

Students interested in teacher certification in ESL or an endorsement to teach ESL in states other than Rhode Island should check with that state's department of teacher certification to ascertain the requirements.  Only individuals holding a current Rhode Island teacher certification in the areas listed above are eligible for endorsement in ESL by completing RI state requirements.

Students interested in completing coursework for this endorsement should contact the Office of Teacher Education, 701 Chafee Building, University of Rhode Island, Kingston, RI. Phone: (401) 874-5930.
