Certification Extensions

English as a Second Language (ESL)

Teacher candidates seeking an ESL certificate must also obtain the relevant general education certificate (e.g.; must obtain an Elementary Education certificate in order to attain an Elementary ESL certification).

The student must complete eighteen (18) semester hours of coursework to include work in each of the following content areas:

ENG 330 or CMD 274	The Structure of American English or Communication Processes	3
Curriculum and Methods for ESL Program
EDC 516	Teaching English as a Second Language	3
Second Language Assessment & Evaluation: Theories of First & Second Language Acquisition
LIN 420	Second Language Acquisition	3
Socio-Cultural Foundations of ESL Education
COM 361 or LIN 320	Intercultural Communications or Sociolinguistics	3
Second Language Literacy for LEP Learners
EDC 563	Teaching Reading to Multicultural Populations	3
Supervised Practicum in ESL classroom
LIN 497	Directed Field Study	3
Total must equal eighteen (18) semester hours of coursework and include one course in each of the content areas listed above and successful completion of LIN 497 TOTAL		18

Practicum

Requirements Followed by URI Coursework

Required Coursework

Supervised internship. Placement must match current or future area of teacher certification (e.g. Early Childhood, Elementary, Secondary English or Foreign Languages).

Typically students will enroll in the internship during the first summer session while the public schools are still in session.
Students must complete coursework requirements prior to enrolling in the internship.
The internship runs for five full weeks for a minimum of 100 clock hours in an ESL classroom.

Final approval for receiving this certificate is through application and transcript review by the Rhode Island Department of Teacher Education and Certification. Students interested in teacher certification in ESL or a certification extension to teach ESL in states other than Rhode Island should check with that state’s department of teacher certification to ascertain that state’s requirements.
