English as a Second Language (ESL)
Rhode Island requirement:
Completion of a supervised practicum in an ESL program.
University of Rhode Island students can meet this requirement through the following:
- Supervised internship (3 credit hours) approximately 5 full weeks or 100 clock hours in an ESL classroom. Placement must match current or future area of teacher certification (Early Childhood, Elementary, Secondary English or Foreign Language Education).
- Students will enroll in LIN 497 - Directed Study for 3 credits. Typically students will complete this requirement during the first summer semester each year while the public schools are still in session. Students must complete coursework requirements prior to their internship.
- Applications for the internship are to be completed as early as possible in the spring semester of the year in which the internship is to be completed
