Use of Assessment Results to Improve Candidate and Program Performance

Content Knowledge

The findings from these assessment results indicated to the SOE Graduate Team that a more systematic evaluation of key assessments was needed. In spring 2005, an analytic rubric for assessing candidate’s content knowledge on the Comprehensive Examination was developed, revised, and piloted. Results from the spring 2005 use of the rubric indicate that this was a useful tool for not only the readers of the responses, but also to the candidates. This rubric will be used for assessing candidates responses on subsequent administration of the Comprehensive Examinations.

Effects on Student Learning and on Creating Environments that Support Learning

The findings from these assessments also indicated that a common rubric would be instrumental in explicating stating expectations for the field practicum study paper and presentation. The SOE Graduate Team is reviewing a draft of an analytic rubric for candidates’ practicum field study across all MA in Education programs that include a field practicum.

Additional Findings

In addition to these findings, the School of Education is working on developing a similar program of study for non-Providence aspiring principals. Lessons learned from the SREB report on this project are important as we move toward a full-fledged educational leadership program.
