Academic Specializations

Academic specialization is of utmost importance to the secondary school (7-12) teacher. Each student must present a subject matter specialization in the selected fields commonly taught in secondary schools. The following specializations are available to prospective secondary school teachers registered with the School of Education.

The professional concentration requires the following:

  • A minimum of 30 hours
  • Related courses (e.g., a year of math) are often required for many concentrations. A specific list of subject matter concentration requirements for each is also available from the Office of Teacher Education, 701 Chafee or the School of Education, Chaffee 705.
  • Middle School Professional Endorsements require a minor, 21 credits or a major and include specific content courses.
