Introduction
Hey there!  My name is Steve*, and I hear you just started college.  That’s great.  You’re starting a new phase of life, becoming independent, having fun, and learning new things.  One of those new things is responsibility for yourself and your money.  I’ve been in your place, and I’d like to share some of my experiences with you.  In particular, I’d like to tell you about personal finance and credit cards. . . .

Yeah, I know, not exactly the most fun or exciting part of college, right?  But your finances are really important, not just now, but for after college too.

I knew one guy who ended up dropping out of school and moving home because he messed up his finances, and some of my friends had trouble renting an apartment after college because of the bad credit history they established when they were in school.  And I know plenty of people who just ended up stressed, spending their time working extra hours and worrying about money instead of studying or having fun.

The stuff I tell you in the next few pages isn’t everything you could or should ever want to know about personal finance.  But hopefully it will get you thinking about dealing with money now and save you some trouble later on.  So give me some time to pass along some tips and experiences, and then your personal finances are up to you.

* All characters in this module are fictional but they are delivering real and accurate information.  The information presented is based on real experiences of former first year students.
