Undergraduate Programs

Overview

Students majoring in Kinesiology can choose one of four major specializations:

  • Exercise Science
  • Health Fitness
  • Physical Education Teacher Education
  • Early Contingent Physical Therapy

Exercise Science

This specialization prepares students to analyze physical activity, exercise, and sport from a physiological perspective, with an emphasis on basic science courses. This option is for students considering careers or graduate degrees in health care professions including exercise physiology, cardiac rehabilitation, physical therapy, physician’s assistant, chiropractic, and occupational therapy.

Health Fitness

This option promotes the understanding of the benefits of physical activity and is designed for students interested in becoming health fitness practitioners. Career opportunities exist in corporate, community, commercial, and hospital-based fitness and wellness centers as health fitness specialists, personal trainers and strength and conditioning specialists. This option also prepares students for advanced study in exercise science, health promotion, preventive medicine and related fields.

Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE)

The PETE program prepares students to become teachers of physical education for all grade (K-12) licensing in Rhode Island. Reciprocal license agreements allow students to teach in most other states. Cognitive course work, teaching methods, educational foundations, and skill acquisition are part of the educational process. The program is enhanced by a variety of practicum experiences in school settings.

Early Contingent Physical Therapy

This advanced specialization is designed for highly qualified students who as incoming freshman have decided to pursue a career in physical therapy and wish to attend the URI Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) program. Students successfully following this advanced program will be allowed to apply for the URI DPT program during their junior year.
