UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND

MASTER WEAVER CERTIFICATE

This program is designed to be a complete and well-rounded study of handweaving structure and technique with an emphasis on personal design. Completion of the course includes both in-studio time and independent work. The program's mission is to insure success at each step of the program with constant evaluations, critiques and encouragement. Our goal is to educate competent, independent and creative weavers.
Using the Carolina Fiber and Fiction Center Instruction Module, the program is divided into three parts.

  • Semester One (Apprentice Certificate) brings the student from raw beginner to an intermediate level of performance. Upon completion of the first level students will be completely familiar with all weaving equipment in a studio, able to plan a project with appropriate materials, warp a loom, utilize solid color theory and design, understand hand drawn and computer generated drafts and perform basic fabric analysis.
  • Semester Two (Journeyman Certificate) emphasizes different weave structures and their design. The student will complete a series of "usable" samples in many structures. These may be completed in the studio setting under the guidance of the instructor. Each piece will be evaluated upon completion. This level will ready the student for independent study.
  • Semester Three (Master Weaver Certificate) provides the student with opportunity to concentrate on an in-depth independent study of a chosen structure or technique. All work must be original in design and executed without the assistance of the instructor. Upon completion the student must present a body of work to be judged and evaluated. These works will then be hung for exhibition.

Students may enter the program at the start of any fall semester.
Completion of certificate requirements necessitates a commitment to three successive fall semesters of work. During the months when class is not in session, students will be required to complete all written and woven work needed to advance to the next level.
