Department of Textiles, Fashion Merchandising and Design

Spring Splash '06!

Following successful events in 2004 and 2005, the Department held its third Spring Splash Fundraiser to celebrate its ties with the Textile and Fashion Industry.  More than 200 people attended the event in URI's Edwards Hall following a reception at the University Club sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Palmer.  The event raised around $30,000 to support the department's activities in the form of student scholarships, guest speakers, field trips, and so on. Aeropostale took the lead in sponsoring the event, donating $20,000 for student scholarships.  TJX were also major sponsors.  URI's President Carothers was in attendance, along with Jayne Richmond, Dean of UC, Tom McElroy (Director of Athletics), Bob Beagle (Director of Advancement) and Geri Beagle (Fiscal Manager of the UIR Foundation)

The show began with a video by Michael Tancredi, (father of Danielle, the student coordinator for the event) featuring the department's faculty, and another that showed the design process.  The show itself, with the theme of "Passion for Fashion" featured 60 designs by 19 designers, judged by Nancy Olson (Kenyon Consumer Products), Chris Laudon (Griffin Manufacturing) and Diane Joyce Montenegro (Paul and Phyllis Charitable Foundation).  This year the judges did some detailed pre-judging before the show began. Thanks also to the judges who selected the designs that took part in the show: URI professors David T. Howard (Costume Design, Theater Department), Barbara Pagh (Chair, Art Department) and Diane Martin (Coordinator, Master Seamstress Program) from more than 100 entries.

While judging was taking place, the Department introduced three new members to its “Wall of Fame” of successful alumnae.  Taylor Hastie, Sharon Soderberg Wilbur and Sarah Peabody Turnbaugh were inducted.  We took the opportunity to thank companies who have given support to our program: Aeropostale, The Preservation Society of Newport County and American Intercontinental University were recognized.

Money raised from last year's event was presented to 4 students in the form of $1000 scholarships.  Recipients were Jacqueline Boardman of Somerset MA, Kimberly Chamberlain from Milton MA, DeAnne Dillon of Westerly RI and Jennifer Hanover of Oakville CT.   Linda Welters won the University's Scholarship Excellence Award last year, and she donated the $1000 honorarium as scholarships to support study abroad: the awards went to Mindy Britto and Rose Eugene. Many years ago Linda worked at a donut shop to earn the money for her study abroad, so she know what this money will mean!

The winners of the fashion show were announced.  First place and a prize of $1000 went to Annick Gouin, a senior from Charlestown RI. Annick also won first prize in 2005: clearly a great talent!.  Megan Oxland (Nutley NJ) won second prize ($750), Jennifer Hanover (Watertown CT) was third ($500) and Kristina DiMatteo (Narragansett RI) and Alison van Hemelrijck (also from Narragansett RI) receveived honorable mentions ($250).  Freshman Katherine Imswiler (Cumberland RI) received a judges' choice award of $100.
