Quinn 309C, (401) 874-2882. susanhannel@uri.edu

Susan teaches the Department's apparel courses: TMD 222 Apparel Production, TMD 325 Apparel I and TMD 335 Apparel II.  Her research interests include dress and textile history, particularly twentieth century dress.  Her dissertation, The Africana Craze During the Jazz Age: A Comparison of French and American Fashion, 1920-1940, investigated the influence of African-American music and African art and textiles on Western fashion in the 1920s and 1930s.

Before going to graduate school, Susan studied fashion design at The Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science (now Philadelphia University) and the Columbus College of Art and Design, Ohio.  While a graduate student at The Ohio State University, she taught courses in apparel pattern making and draping, and the aesthetics of dress, as well as advising students in University College.  She also taught pattern making at the Columbus College of Art and Design.

Her "real-life" work experience in the apparel industry included work as a pattern maker for a custom-design clothing boutique and as a production manager for a design studio.  In addition, she had a short stint as a sewing machine operator for an activewear apparel manufacturer.  Susan has also worked in fabric retailing for JoAnn's Fabrics, and in apparel retailing at Lazarus and Marshall Fields.
