Summary
by Meghan Kelly
Many people look to fashion magazines for information pertaining to new trends and styles. These magazines have been changing and expanding over the past few years. Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar were previously the standard magazines published pertaining to the fashion industry. Currently, dozens of magazines are geared to male, female, and teen markets. Teen and women’s magazines are the largest categories of fashion magazines on the market. Some magazines are emerging due to changing demographics and lifestyles. Many fashion magazines are redefining themselves and including articles on Hollywood glamour and celebrities as well as home furnishings. Additionally, e-zines are a new way of looking at magazines that are exclusively featured on the internet.
In
Style magazine is one magazine that has picked up on new trends in the
industry. In Style is a knock off of People
magazine, featuring more celebrity gossip and “star sightings.”
There is an apparent stress on what celebrities are wearing and the
activities that they participate in.
Mode
magazine is a relatively new publication that features fashion for plus sized
women. The models in this
magazine range in size from 12 to 16. It is an appropriate magazine for the times since
approximately 50% of American women wear a size 12 or above.
Lucky
is another new fashion magazine for women.
This publication is solely focused on shopping and provides shopping
advice and locations for readers. This
magazine was launched this past winter. It
targets women aged 25 to 33 with incomes of approximately $50,000.
The teen population is the fastest
growing age segment under the age of 35.
The teen market spent a reported $153 billion in 1995.
Fittingly, more teen magazines have entered the scene.
Some of the most popular teen magazines include Elle
Girl, Teen Vogue, Cosmo Girl, Teen People, and Teen. The concepts
presented in these magazines have become much more mature given the changing
lifestyles of this target market. More
sophisticated articles are focused on eating disorders, racism and
discrimination, pregnancy, and rape. Teen
magazine has eliminated their columns on relationship advice, embarrassing
stories, and love quizzes. Now, Teen
features articles pertaining to celebrities, fashion styles, and shopping.
