                        Position Description

 

TITLE:            Assistant Director, Facilities and

                  Operations/Custodial Services

 

DIVISION:         Business and Finance

 

REPORTS TO:       Associate Director, Facilities and

                  Operations/Physical Plant

 

GRADE:            13

 

SUPERVISES:       Custodial staff and supervisory personnel.

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Plan, organize and implement an effective program of custodial services throughout the academic, athletic, and administrative buildings at the University of Rhode Island.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Supervise custodial and environmental services to all academic, athletic, and administrative buildings.

 

Recommend and manage planning and organization of such programs which include the determination of staffing needs,

budgetary needs and estimates.  Supervise and evaluate the work of a staff engaged in such programs.

 

Develop and apply technical procedures, standards, and instructions which will serve to create and preserve a clean,

safe and sanitary environment.

 

Review the application and effectiveness of standards and instructions concerning corrective measures and cleaning

procedures.

 

Ascertain effectiveness of new products, equipment and techniques through consultation with the University's

Purchasing Office and Division of Purchases Standards Committee.

 

Develop the content of continuous formal and on-the-job training programs to acquaint personnel with custodial and

sanitary activities, standards and practices and the effectiveness of new developments in custodial and sanitary

techniques and procedures.

 

Organize and implement facilities set-ups for special events and ceremonies including Commencement and Conference Center

activities.

 

Manage campus-wide materials recycling program to comply with state regulations. Ascertain effectiveness of program and

recommend needed adjustments.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Project, monitor and evaluate department budget.

 

Assist in establishing guidelines and policies.

 

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:  Valid drivers license required.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

This position is subject to both inside and outside work and extreme cold and hot temperatures can be encountered in this

position.  The potential exists where noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils and wearing a respirator

might also be encountered.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Bachelor's degree required with specialization in Business Management. Employment in a public agency or in private industry in a supervisory capacity for at least three to five years involving professional custodial work required.  Must have administrative, supervisory and management skills; a thorough knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in the institutional housekeeping.  Must be able to apply special training in sanitation and custodial services, coordinate the staff, program supportive functions to maintain custodial programs of a large institution; the ability to plan, keep records, supervise and review the work of a large group of employees.  Must have knowledge of labor relations/contract administration, materials recycling programs and personal computer experience desirable. This position involves traveling throughout the University. This position requires that the incumbent be able to interpret institution policies, plans, objectives, rules and regulations and communicate the interpretation to subordinates and others. Must also be able to prepare and present detailed studies and reports to include recommendations concerning the substance of the studies and reports.
