                            Position Description

 

TITLE:            Assistant Director, Multicultural Student Services

 

DIVISION:         Student Affairs (Multicultural Center)

 

REPORTS TO:       Director, Multicultural Student Services

 

GRADE:            12

 

SUPERVISES:       Student staff (Graduate/Undergraduate)

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Identify the cultural, organizational, social, developmental and individual needs of diverse students.  Work with diverse students to facilitate their development in activities and organizations, their interaction with each other, and their participation in the general life of the campus.  Promote the involvement of diverse students in the programs and activities of the Multicultural Center.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Identify the needs of diverse students through formal and informal assessment techniques.

 

Provide advice and technical support to the students involved in campus activities and organizations.

 

Facilitate the involvement of students in the programs and activities of the Center.

 

Provide the leadership and organizational training of diverse students by teaching a course or conducting workshops and seminars.

 

Assist the Director in supervising student staff by conducting student staff meetings, and provide programs for orientation and staff development.

 

Assist the Director in planning and implementing Unity Weekend.

 

Assist the Director in managing the Center facility.

 

Serve as the responsible administrator in the absence of the Director.

 

Assist the Director in developing and maintaining the Center Website.


Participate as a member of the Center's management team assisting in goal setting and problem solving and the development of programs and services.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Perform all other duties and related tasks assigned by the Director.

 

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

 

Personal computers, printers, word processing, database management, and spreadsheet software.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Master's degree in student personnel, counseling, or a related field required, as is two years of professional experience in a related field with preference given to those experienced in working with multicultural students and organizations.  Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and be able to interpret University policy effectively to students, faculty and staff.  Must possess strong interpersonal skills and be able to prepare and deliver presentations before small, medium and large groups.
