Position Description
TITLE: Coordinator, Sports Communication
DIVISION: Student Affairs (Athletics)
REPORTS TO: Assistant Director, Sports Communication
GRADE: 7
SUPERVISES: Assist in supervising Sports Information intern,
student assistants and clerical support staff.
BASIC FUNCTION:
Assist in generating and implementing effective communication and public relations programs to best indicate to the public
the objectives of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist with the publishing for all sports, with an emphasis on women's athletics and Olympic sports.
Serve as primary contact for the following: field hockey and volleyball, and assist with football in the fall; women's
basketball and men's and women's swimming and assist with men's basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring.
Assist with the design and development of brochures and media guides for women's athletics and Olympic sports; edit the
booster club newsletter.
Write and edit news releases with a special focus on women's athletics.
Travel when appropriate with a flagship sport and provide statistical information for coaches.
Responsible for maintenance of a thorough statistical database on assigned programs. Assemble statistics and distribute
post-game reports at athletic events.
OTHER DUTIES AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and maintain an adequate file of events and pertinent information.
Assist with the solicitation of commercial sponsorship for athletics.
LICENSES, TOOLS
AND EQUIPMENT:
Personal computers, printers and word processing, database management and spreadsheet software. Software to include:
Microsoft Word 6.0, PageMaker 5.0 and special statistical packages such as Statcrew, Statman, Volstat and Basestat.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or a related
field required. The following are also required: two years of professional experience
in collegiate sports information; demonstrated computer skills and experience
in desktop publishing, including PC computers and word processing skills
(Microsoft Word, PageMaker and special statistical packages such as the
Automated Scorebook). Must be able to update and maintain the department's
website, utilizing Netitor Software or similar sports-related content management
system. Must possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate
effectively verbally and in writing. Strong
public relations skills required.
