                          Position Description

 

 

TITLE:           Marine Research Specialist II

 

DIVISION:        Academic Affairs (Graduate School of Oceanography)

 

REPORTS TO:      Principal Investigator/Professor

 

GRADE:           7

 

SUPERVISES:      May supervise support staff

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Perform experimental and developmental work in support of major research programs.  Develop new or modify existing research methods and procedures.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Use established analytical, experimental and investigative methods and techniques, with minor modifications and adaptations.

 

Collect, process, monitor and analyze samples and/or data.

 

Maintain laboratory for conformance with research priorities.

 

Responsible for problem definition and solution.

 

Assist with the preparation for publication of manuscripts containing the results of research efforts.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Perform additional duties as required.

 

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

 

Personal computers, printers; word processing, database management, and spreadsheet software; laboratory equipment as specified.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

A bachelor's degree in _________________ or related field required, with 2-3 years of relevant research experience (as defined by the PI) required; advanced coursework in ___________________ is preferred.  Additional experience must include:  ___________________________.  Strong written and oral communication skills and strong organizational skills are required.  Must be able to work at sea as needed.
