                        Position Description

 

TITLE:            Clinical Counselor

 

DIVISION:         Student Development (Counseling Center)

 

REPORTS TO:       Director, Counseling

 

GRADE:            13

 

SUPERVISES:       Graduate assistants and interns

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Provide therapeutic and counseling services to meet student needs equally through (1) direct service which is of a "remedial" or "corrective" nature via individual, family, marital or couples therapy; (2) developmental-consultative efforts and programs aimed at promoting the personal and professional competence of students; (3) consultation with students, faculty, and extended family; (4) training and supervision of graduate students and interns.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Provide individual, family, or marital therapy and counseling to students; conduct intake interviews; provide case recordings, test interpretation, and other activities related to quality direct service. 

 

Design and implement programs aimed at meeting the typical developmental and remedial needs of students, particularly the more mature (older) students, single parents, and married students.

 

Be knowledgeable about community volunteer programs and statewide public programs in order that duplication of existing resources is not promulgated by the University, and so that adequate referral can be made to these programs.

 

 Serve as a consultant to various persons and agencies within the campus community on matters of broad developmental and mental health concerns.

 

Assist with upgrading the helping skills of students, faculty, and staff who function in a variety of helping roles.

 

Supervise graduate students in training from the various helping disciplines who intern at the Counseling Center.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Carry out administrative functions required by the agency or by the cooperating department or school.

 

Assist in the design and implementation of an appropriate counseling service evaluation system.

 

Perform other duties as required.

 

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

 

Appropriate certification credential must be in hand or obtained within two years of employment and maintained thereafter.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

An earned MSW, MED, MA or MS in counseling or related field with at least four years of full-time experience in a clinical setting.  Licensure in Rhode Island with appropriate certification credential must be in hand or obtained within two years of employment and maintained thereafter.  Experience must include complex counseling, therapy and related services, including demonstrated experience and skill in providing remedial counseling assistance to individuals and groups and development of preventive and outreach programs.  Demonstrated experience with diverse populations, especially varied racial and ethnic groups, is required.  Experience in a counseling center in a higher education setting or demonstrated counseling experience with young adults is preferred.  Experience in training and supervising student trainees is also desirable. Must possess a good working knowledge of individual pathology, human development, family structure in various cultures, patterns of marital interaction and non-family relationship patterns.  This position requires that the incumbent possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.  Must possess strong interpersonal skills.
