                            Position Description

 

 

TITLE:            Ship's Technician IV

 

DIVISION:         Graduate School of Oceanography

 

REPORTS TO:       Manager, Technical Services

 

GRADE:            13

 

SUPERVISES:       N/A

 

BASIC FUNCTION:

 

Support science missions at sea.  Plan and supervise deck science operations; operate, calibrate and maintain various types of scientific instrumentation on board research vessel; operate and troubleshoot shipboard computer networks.  Primarily responsible for the integrity of scientific data collection and safekeeping of collected data from shipboard instrumentation.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Serve at sea on cruises of variable length from 5 to 35 days.  Service on consecutive cruises may be required.  Serve up to a total of 6 months per calendar year on sea assignment in accordance with current applicable union contract.

 

During periods of shore duty incumbent is responsible for the maintenance, cleaning and repair of scientific equipment for which he or she is assigned responsibility.  This includes the maintenance of the approved calibration intervals and logs.

 

While on shore incumbent must be available for extended and weekend hours as required for support of the research vessel while in port.  Such support may include wire winding on oceanographic winches, changing lab layouts and installing or removing instrumentation.

 

Incumbent is expected to keep current with technical advancements in oceanographic instrumentation, to attend various seminars and training courses offered by manufacturers or others as coordinated with the manager.

 

Act as scientific liaison between ship’s crew and science party.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Provide manager with budgetary projections for the instrumentation under his/her cognizance and to work with the manager on upcoming years’ budget.

 

Perform other duties as required.

 

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

 

Personal computers, printers, and word processing, database management, and spreadsheet software.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:

 

This position may be exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Bachelor's degree in science or engineering or a combination of relevant marine technician work experience and specialized computer/instrumentation courses is required.  A minimum of two years' experience in a position involving sea duty on a research vessel where primary responsibility was the operation and maintenance of science mission instrumentation is required.  The following are also required:  competency in the operation of networked computer systems operating in a variety of environments; experience in DOS, Windows 95 and NT; hands on operating experience with CTD systems, Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers and water samplers; a record of troubleshooting and hands on problem solving under adverse conditions; must be physically capable of working on board ship for up to 12 hour shifts for the length of the cruises; must be able to serve up to six months at sea annually; must be capable of performing heavy physical work on deck in severe and inclement weather; must have a high level of personal intercommunication skills in order to interface between the ship’s crew and science party.  Experience in UNIX or Linus is highly desirable.  A wide range of other instrumentation experience also desirable.
