CLASS TITLE: SHEET METAL WORKER
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
To fabricate, install and repair sheet metal articles, structures, fixtures and equipment; to repair copper or othe rkinds of metal roofs; and to do related work as required.
Receives work assignments from a superior with considerable latitude for the use of independent judgment in the application of the practices and techniques of the trade; work is reviewed usually upon completion for satisfactory performance.
As requied, supervises the work of helpers or others assigned to assist.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
To fabricate, install and repair sheet metal articles, structures, fixtures and equipment.
To make and repair such articles as food boxes, milk cans, stovepipes and a variety of kitchen utensils and equipment.
To make patterns; to cut, bend, fit, weld, solder, rivet and burn various metal parts; and to repair and replace metal parts.
To repair copper or other kinds of metal roofs and related items, such as gutters, cornices, skylights, and flashings.
To do related work as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES:
A thorough knowledge of the practices, techniques, tools, equipment and materials used in the fabrication and repair of sheet metal goods and skill in the application of such practices and techniques; a working knowledge of various kinds of metals used in sheet metal work, their adaptability and uses; a working knowledge of safety measures and precautions; skill in the use and care of sheet metal work tools and equipment; the ability to work from plans and specifications and to folow rough sketches and oral and written instructions; and related capacities and abilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Such as may have been gained through: completion of eight school grades; and
Such as may have been gained through: employment as a journeyman sheet metal worker
Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: At the time of appointment must be physically qualified to perform assigned duties as evidenced by a physician's certificate
