TITLE:
CLINICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST (General)
CLASS DEFINITION:
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
To perform a variety of standardized tests and quality control in a clinical laboratory within the field of specialization indicated by the title within the group; to assist in the performance of complex examinations and tests; and to do related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Work is subject to review in process and upon completion by a superior for conformance to prescribed instructions and standard laboratory methods.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
As required, supervises the work of technicians and others assigned to assist in laboratory work.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
To perform a variety of standardized tests and quality control in a clinical laboratory within the field of specialization indicated by the title within the group such as hematology, chemistry, serology, transfusion and microbiology laboratories or as required any combination thereof;
To analyze and interpret findings in accordance with established procedures and to present conclusions and recommendations through the submission of analytical reports to superiors.
To perform microbiological and serological tests for the identification, enumeration and description of bacteria or pathological conditions.
To perform biochemical tests and analyses on blood, urine and other body fluids.
To perform routine and special hematological tests and analyses.
To assist in the performance of complex examinations and tests.
To prepare and test standardized stains, culture medial and reagents.
To maintain various laboratory instruments.
To learn new and improved laboratory methods and procedures.
To participate in maintaining a quality assessment program.
To perform quality control procedures and identify compliance standards.
To utilize safety procedures according to established standards.
To assist in evaluations involving quality assessment and improvement programs.
To utilize and maintain a data management system incorporating the latest computer technology.
To keep records of tests and analyses and prepare reports as required.
To comply with all applicable governmental laws and regulations and institutional policies and procedures.
To participate in the instruction and evaluation
of students.
To do related work as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES:
A working knowledge of standard laboratory instruments and equipment and the techniques and procedures concerning their use; a working knowledge of the basic theories, principles and practices of Clinical Laboratory Science; a working knowledge of the literature and current developments in the field of Clinical Laboratory Science; the ability to exercise judgment in preparing specimens for testing, determining appropriate test procedures, and interpreting test results; the ability to perform Clinical Laboratory Science tests with a high degree of accuracy and precision; the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; the ability to prepare clean and concise reports; and related capacities and abilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
EDUCATION:
Such as may have been gained through graduation from a college of recognized standing with a bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science, biology, chemistry or physical science.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Must meet the requirements for licensure as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist as required by Rhode Island law and regulations.
