CLASS TITLE:                               FARMER (Animal)

CLASS DEFINITION:

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

To perform responsible work involved in institutional and experimental farming in the branch indicated by the title of the class; and to do related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under close supervision of a superior; work is checked while in process and upon completion.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

May supervise the manual work of a small group of laborers.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

To perform responsible animal husbandry work, including animal handling, animal restraint, animal identification and animal health maintenance, routine animal management practices such as the milking, tattooing, vaccinating, castrating, car tagging and feeding and watering animals would be performed; Additionally, the farmer would clean animal living quarters and arrange bedding, build and maintain fences, pens and barns, keep meticulous records about the animals and perform related work as required.  Last the farmer would perform work related to  both teaching and research.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES:

A working knowledge of farm methods and animal management; A familiarity with modern farm animal management practices including breeding and genetics; and related capacities and abilities.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

EDUCATION:
Such as may have been gained through completion of ten school grades; and

EXPERIENCE:
Such as may have been gained through employment in the field of specialization indicated (animal).

OR- any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

At the time of appointment must be physically qualified to perform assigned duties as evidenced by a physician's certificate.
