CLASS TITLE: FIRE/BURGLAR ALARM TECHNICIAN (URI)
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
To install, inspect and maintain the university fire and burglar alarm systems on the Kingston, Narragansett Bay, W> Alton Jones and Providence campuses; and to do related work as required.
Works under the general supervision of Director, Safety and Risk Management, with latitude for carrying out fire and burglar alarm inspections, and making necessary repairs and/or recommendations regarding repair and maintenance. The work is assigned as required by Supervisor, Alarms, or as required by the nature of the alarm.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
To install, inspect and maintain fire and burglar alarm systems, including mounting of panels, bending and securing EMT pipe, and running wire from panel to all devices, master box, ground and power supply.
To maintain the master burglar alarm system.
To read blueprints and physically lay out systems to comply with prints, departmental needs and applicable code(s).
To periodically test and inspect all alarm devices and equipment located in academic, administrative and residential buildings to ensure proper operation.
To assist with compliance inspections, write follow-up reports, and make recommendations for remedial measures if necessary.
To take battery voltage reading, change inoperable devices and alarm panel components as needed, and make and keep written reports of all aspects of the work as it is completed.
To advise contractors with regard to system installation, placing of devices and components.
To conduct fire drills at various hours of the day and night, recording timed evacuations and filling out reports as required.
To be responsible for resetting systems after alarms have been activated by any one of the following: fires, false alarms, burglary, bomb threats, and power outages, as well as associated trouble with components, (battery faults, shorts circuits, high voltages, ground faults, capacitors, diodes, voltage regulators and power modules).
To do related work as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES:
A thorough knowledge of Rhode Island State Fire Code (Fire Alarm Section) and of the National Electrical Code; the ability to read blueprints and to physically lay out alarm systems to comply with blueprints, with departmental needs and with the applicable code(s); a thorough knowledge of the differences between various alarm devices, their uses and the systems with which they are compatible; a thorough knowledge of the alarm activating aspects and operating procedures of sprinkler systems in order to determine proper settings, flow and pressure; a thorough knowledge of alarm installation procedures and an understanding of the function of various alarm systems; the ability to keep records; and related capacities and abilities.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Such as may have been gained through graduation from senior high school; and
Such as may have been gained through work related experience with alarm systems (e.g., security companies; police or fire departments), or with electrical installation and training.
OR- any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: At the time of appointment must possess a Journeyman's Fire Alarm Installer License and must maintain such licensure as a condition of employment.
